The Best Way to Farm Neuromods in Prey

With the right fabrication license, Prey's neuromods can be crafted, up to a point. There's a quest to lift this block that restricts their creation.

Neuromods are the powerful but rare resource that fuels the RPG system in Prey. Well-hidden or given to the player as a reward, they are a valuable commodity, allowing the player to upgrade and acquire new abilities to assist in exploration, combat, and various other aspects of the game. While all play styles can benefit from a healthy supply of neuromods, they are especially necessary if the player relies heavily on the use of alien powers. Besides requiring research in order to unlock alien abilities, upgrading them to their higher tiers also requires a generous number of neuromods.

Players new to Prey will soon discover one major issue with farming neuromods: After Morgan fabricates five neuromods, a red message appears on the Fabricator machine which reads “Fabrication plan DRM does not match security key! For authorization contact Halden Graves.” Morgan receives a call from Alex Yu saying that Graves halted the production of neuromods via Fabricator, and it must be re-engaged from the Neuromod Division before more can be made. This triggers a side quest called ‘Copy Protection.’

The Neuromod Division is the game’s start location, and can be returned to through the Talos I Lobby. Halden Graves’ office is on the top floor, which can be reached most easily by using one of Prey’s most useful weapons, the GLOO Cannon. Alternatively, with enough ranks in Repair the player can fix the lifts at the back of the Neuromod Division atrium. Unless the player has four ranks in hacking, there is no way to open the door to Fabrication. The best alternate entrance is through Volunteer Quarters next door.

The corpse of Divya Naaz can be found in the Atrium propped against a railing. Looting her reveals the code to Volunteer Quarters. Input the code into the door, and enter the darkened wing. Proceed through the open door on the left. The door has a sign in front that reads "authorized personnel only." Here there is a desk, behind which a small hatch leads to a room that can be climbed with more GLOO. There are several great Typhon Abilities that will make the next room easier, particularly Machine Mind and Psychoshock since Graves’ office is guarded by a Technopath. The Stun Gun, Q-Beam, and EMP Grenades are especially effective. Once the Technopath is defeated and the room is clear, Graves' office can be opened in a couple of different ways:

The keycard to Graves' office can be found in the floor grating near the Fabricator in the main room and can be collected with Remote Manipulation or by removing the grate via Leverage or a Recycler Charge. A more indirect approach is to use the GLOO Cannon to scale the side of Graves' office. The button to unlock Graves’ office from the inside can be seen through a slat in the ceiling. Players focusing on non-Typhon abilities cannot use Remote Manipulation to flip this switch, but there's another way: Fire a dart at the button with the Huntress Boltcaster and the office door will unlock! Inside the office, the player must contend with a Greater Mimic. Afterward, Neuromod Fabrication can be re-enabled via a file on Graves' Workstation. Now neuromods can be fabricated indefinitely, as long as there’s enough exotic material to go on crafting them.
