It was Pandora’s Actor all along! The most obvious twist in the world leads us into Overlord Season 4 Episode 12 where we see Ainz go up against Riku Amageia. Let’s see what went down in this review!

The original, actually good MMO-based isekai show is back for its fourth season with Overlord Season 4. The series is again being produced by Studio Madhouse, which has produced all of the previous seasons of the show alongside other highly popular shows such as Death Note, One Punch Man, and Sonny Boy. This new season is also referred to as Overlord 4 and Overlord IV.

Naoyuki Itou is directing the show again. He is known for also being behind all of the original seasons alongside several other well-known shows such as Chihayafuru and Kanon. Overlord is based on a Light Novel written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by “so-bin”. This episode is also known as Overlord 4 Episode 12 and Overlord IV Episode 12. Oh, Pandora’s Actor, how have I missed you. Seriously, the biggest crime of the entire series is that he is not on our screens as much as the other floor guardians are. Pandora’s actor is only taken out of his dungeon when Ainz requires his shape-shifting powers and is left to rot there most other times. He is a hilarious character who deserves to be a part of the show more, but I understand how someone like him could be very grating for a portion of the audience if used more liberally than sparingly. However, Ainz being embarrassed by and for the only floor guardian he created was an inspired choice.

Despite the Ainz in the previous episode being obviously Pandora’s Actor, the reasons behind why this step was taken make sense with the plot the show has been trying to portray this entire season. Ainz has been wary of another human player this entire season, and his paranoia has largely been responsible for the severe actions he has made towards the destruction of the Empire and its citizens. That, and him having no idea how politics actually works and relying on bloodthirsty Demiurge and Albedo for a lot of it.

Speaking of the Empire, this was the episode where all of Ainz’s plans came to fruition. The careful deconstruction of the entire aspect of kingdom warfare has been great despite being different from every other show that has featured it. You see, there is no war in Overlord. The situation is as far away from war as you can get because war means either side has a chance to win. This is a massacre, and no one will come out alive who isn’t important to Ainz’s plans in some way.

All that remains is despair on the part of the Empire citizens, as this episode so elegantly displayed. It used the resources it had cultivated throughout the time it had been running and the characters it had developed, to showcase how horrid this was for the people with inferior power who were going through it. Whether it be the last royal left standing in the princess, her protector Climb, or the horribly underused but undeniably cool Brain Umglauss. While some would be right in saying it was a bit of a waste to build up these characters for so long just to end them like this, it does make for an extremely efficient manner to spread despair.

This episode was decent, but one couldn’t help but wonder if this season was worth it at this point. All that has been accomplished and built in this season seems to be too long-winded and overblown to have a satisfying conclusion. The political manoeuvring and planning seem like a non-issue when the end result is the same as what it would have been without it, i.e., the Empire’s destruction. This has been a constant complaint throughout this review series, but this season has been highly inflated. We can just hope that the finale will set things right somewhat.

Overlord Season 4 Episode 12 was a decent episode that featured a lot of great moments and tied up a few knots that didn’t need to be tied. The build to the finale has been weak.

It’s the KINGDOM, NOT the Empire.

Thanks for the correction. It can get a little confusing at times in this show.
