The Outcome Matters Next Level Dentistry Next Level Outcomes

Long grass has become the bane of many Canberrans’ existence. Photo: Michelle Kroll.

With rain comes growth – and while no one would argue this is a bad thing, many agree it is possible to have too much of a good thing. As in grass.

There’s long, out-of-control grass everywhere you look – and in some cases, local sports grounds are out of action and motorists are struggling to see past it as it takes over roundabouts and verges around Canberra.

While the ACT Government says it’s only two weeks behind its regular mowing schedule, the Opposition simply doesn’t think that’s good enough, saying the same excuses of ‘unexpected rain’ are heard year upon year.

In response, Opposition whip Jeremy Hanson last week moved a motion in the place of Opposition spokesperson for city services Nicole Lawder calling on the ACT Government to update its mowing schedule in response to weather patterns and increase funding.

Mr Hanson wasn’t willing to cut the government any slack, even though the Bureau of Meteorology has just declared a La Niña in the Pacific Ocean, and it’s very likely this month could become the city’s wettest month ever recorded.

“Every year, when we get a bit of rainfall, the government just does not keep up with the mowing,” he said.

“Their excuse is ‘oh, well, we weren’t expecting this.”

“They need to be better prepared.”

The Opposition called for more resources, surge funding and a better long-term strategy to get the mowing done.

Mr Hanson said the motion was being moved in order to express the concerns of frustrated Canberrans.

He accused the ACT Government of continual neglect of basic services and of losing touch with the ordinary Canberran.

“There’s no doubt that this government is not focused on suburbs and on the things that matter to Canberrans,” Mr Hanson said.

“It’s got its priorities wrong.”

Minister for City Services Chris Steel, however, said staying on top of mowing was already one of the government’s highest priorities.

He said preparation for this year’s mowing program started in July and is now going ahead at full capacity, but the Government could not control the rain.

“Even with the best-laid plans, you can’t mow a lawn when it’s wet,” he said. “It damages the equipment and it’s a safety issue.”

Mr Steel said that despite all of the rain, the mowing program was only two weeks behind and mowing crews were working as hard as possible.

The Government did not support Mr Hanson’s motion, instead almost entirely amending it to call on the ACT Government to “continue providing high levels of funding to mowing activities” and to recognise the impacts of recent rainfall and the pandemic.

Elsewhere in the city, innovative methods are being used to keep on top of land management.

Elisabeth Larsen with one of her star goats, Monty, who chews away at invasive weeds on NCA lands. Photo: NCA.

The National Capital Authority, for example, uses goats to manage introduced weeds on some of its lands that are outside of the National Triangle.

NCA Open Space manager Michelle Jeffrey said goats are handy because they have a massive appetite for the kinds of species land managers deem ‘invasive’ such as blackberry and hawthorn.

“What they don’t eat, they trample,” Ms Jeffrey explained.

“This helps reduce the bio-mass and makes it easier for any follow-up crews to come through.”

They are managed by Goat Manager Elisabeth Larsen who keeps them in order with an electric-fenced pen that keeps them in, and other animals like dogs, out.

Unlike crews, goats also don’t need lunch breaks and they don’t mind working weekends either, Ms Jeffrey noted.

But the goats can’t be used to mow lawns and it turns out even they don’t like the rain that much.

Areas in Gungahlin haven’t been mowed for at least 6 months! How hard is it to use our high rates money to employ some more mowers?

Ohhh myyy Goddd !…Crooked pavements!…pot holes in our roads!…and now it’s long grass !!!! FFS we hardly had any 3/4 years ago !!!… Canberra, the manicured garden city !…get a grip and put things in perspective please.

“They put the sheep in the solar panel paddocks along Monaro near Rose Cottage. Win win!”

Probably some sort of tax dodge.

If Tim Flannery was asked about the situation he would say: “there will be no rain so no grass will grow and even the grass that does grow would not be mown”.

And he would be half-right, for a change.

It’s disgusting we pay rates and expensive ones at that, and the Government can’t even provide a basic service. Even the mowing they have done is appalling, still big patches of long grass where the big mowers can’t get, what do we pay our rates for?

Anthony Nolan did you give the goats to the act government

Canberra was so much better off when we were part of the federal government , since our local government started everything has gotten worse. Once upon a time this was not even a problem.

If it’s only 2 weeks behind then they need to improve the mowing schedule a lot because grass don’t grow 4ft high in 2 weeks

How about getting those wonderful men and women on Community Corrections Orders and non-custodial sentences out and about pushing mowers?

I’m really not sure what the issue is here. The grass grows because it’s raining. It stops and the mowers appear to cut it down.

It then rains again, tempting the grass to grow again and a few days later, the mowers appear and cut it again.

I don’t expect the mowers to be sitting and immediately jump on the grass as soon as the rains stop.

Besides, if they cut the grass, it increases the pollen that’s generally around and makes (at least mine) hayfever worse.

Randy Goldberg you mean 6 months later? You must live in a more affluent area than Gungahlin, as it seems we have been allocated one retiree and a push mower? There were 2 intersections where you couldn’t see approaching cars because of the grass height!

“Never seen Canberra look so poor and unkept. Absolute disgrace”

That’s because the spick and span National Arboretum (a bottomless money-pit) gets allocated too many grass cutting resources.

Lol I’m sure that’s the explanation (insert sarcastic rolling eyes here)…..

If someone could access the financial accounts for the money tree farm there would be more eyes rolling.

I have seen more of the public with there house hold mower mowing the streets around Dunlop then I have any services unfortunately. But thank you to all those men and women who have been getting out there in there own time doing something the government is paid to look after.

Never seen Canberra look so poor and unkept. Absolute disgrace

We love the work of mower teams and their supervisors. Keep em coming.

The grass needs to be mown before it sets seed otherwise noxious weeds like Chilean needle grass which I saw on Northbourne avenue today will spread like wildfire

We just had a week in Canberra visiting our son and we commented on the long grass everywhere we went. I ask if there was a mower shortage. Not a good look for the Nations capital

Trish Hunt It has been raining a lot so it makes sense it is so tall. We are building a house and the builder has to keep canceling the lawn mower guy because of the rain. This is my backyard.

It’s called work for the dole Bob 😉

Ken couldn’t happen in the Watermelon Republic of the ACT!

How about the ACT Govt does what they do in the USA; have individuals or a business sponsor a section of highway. Their contribution pays directly for its minor upkeep. “This Kilometre of Monaro Highway tidily presented courtesy of (insert business name here)”

Glysophate at 2lt to the ha/ 100 lt water Will sort it for months

The ACT Govt is spending the money on the new tram from civic to Woden, go figure.

Bush capital is a apt name for Canberra now no mowing.

They probably sacked all the unvacx’d gardners who work outside, god the bloody world has gone mad.

A recent visit 3 days ago to Canberra saw2.3 foot high weeds at roundabouts road edges and land strips . I was very surprised at the unkempt look as I spent 50 years of my life there only leaving 4 years ago 😳

It’s not only with all the rain. It’s been happening for a long time. As a regular visitor to Canberra I like to take my grandchildren for walks/ rides to the park. I’m often concerned about the long grass. I live in country NSW where our our parks are well looked after by council. It’s sad to see our Capital City not so well looked after. 🙃

There’s a guy lives somewhere in Dunlop that has been mowing the length of Kerrigan St for weeks now, with a hand held mower, good on him but it must be getting a bit much by now & Thankyou for Keeping us tidy!

Jude Beck Allan is that wonderful man. He was there again today!

Kirstin Maree we’ve (well Anthony) has been doing our nature strips and down along the walkway and next doors for a while now. It gets so long so quickly and I don’t trust the slimey things to come and visit in it

So they won’t be able to make it next Sat? What a shame….

You can thank all those who wanted self government all those years ago

I don’t really get the complaints about roundabouts…. aren’t roundabouts designed so that (if you approach at a safe speed) you don’t need to see oncoming traffic? Your biggest concern is traffic from the right (including turning oncoming traffic) – but even if ling grass obscures your view at the line, you should have time to enter the roundabout if you can’t see anyone (in some cases with certain sized roundabouts i can imagine an annoyance (though not a danger), but I think that’s a driver behaviour problem not a long grass problem)

Tim Rozitis I don’t buy into the whinging here – this is an unprecedented season. But I was just at Yarra glen roundabout and the long grass and safe driving turned it into a stop sign rather than a give way.

That’s a high traffic roundabout – the long grass will make peak hours worse, and not everyone will just be more careful – if an idiot pulls out because they can’t see over the grass they are hurting, potentially killing, more than themselves.

Tim Rozitis, this is whinge fest mate, no commonsense here!

Remember the days before contractors. Each area had a Parks and Gardens Depot. 30 to 40 workers employed to mow lawns look after ovals, public gardens etc… Kept workers employed, created social contacts etc. The economy from the Parks and Gardens system was circular. New equipment regularly kept local manufacturing working, filter down effect so second hand equipment meant that farmers etc had access to reasonably priced equipment. Now we have contractors that try to do it all with one tractor…Removing the social and industrial circles that the employment created. Surely a return to the old system will stimulate not only the local economy will also have an effect on community.

Laurie Berry careful you’ll make to much sense

ha ! Good luck with that. Thus pathetic govt cant even shut up one BARKING DOG eh Chris

Stop going out to “business functions ” and spend the money on more services and by the ways your ACT Mental Health is absolute RUBBISH! What a “B grade” service!

I have a mowing business and a big mower Why can’t private small business mow for ACT Government

Tristan Ward most of the main roads are contracted out to contractors.

Wow! So much hate towards the government. People need to understand that they need to plan when cutting near major roads. Eg… traffic management, litter pickers, street sweepers, weed controller and horticulture crews to brush cut and poles and other mowing obstacles. Once all that is sorted then they can go ahead and mow.

Chris Montgomery we understand they need to plan, that’s a given. What we don’t understand is why they can’t plan! weather isn’t the issue as this has been happening in Canberra for years. Barr govt just doesn’t know how to run business well.

Aren’t these mowing services contractors to the government? And didn’t the government give them a few new mowers at the beginning of the year? To my understanding it’s contractors being paid to do a job they’re not doing.

Sally Lee government don’t give contractors mowers.

who is the Minister for Mowing this year??

It’s a problem, I’m having enough dramas mowing my own lawn, I can watch it grow as I’m mowing 😳 Government has no chance

I if I go mow the roundabout at Rose cottage and the monaro highway myself. will I get in trouble because we have a lazy government? And what about when it’s not raining and is to hot to mow so we get the bushfire and a forced hand shake again.

If it doesn’t appease the pretentious Braddon residents, then Andrew Barr simply doesn’t care..

Went to canberra the other day and was shocked to see the long grass along northbourne ave. Normally a beautiful place.

The long grass around the roads in Canberra is an accident waiting to happen. Half the time you can’t see the cars until they are right on you. Not a very pretty city at the moment. Years ago it was always beautiful and maintained, now it’s an eyesore.

On a recent visit back to Canberra this was exactly what caught our eye. As well as being unsightly and a fire danger we found some corners were so overgrown that it didn’t feel safe driving through the intersection because we really couldn’t see if anything was coming! And we drive an SUV. Imagine trying to drive in a small hatchback.

I am more afraid of a kid being hit by a car when crossing the road cause they are too short to see if there are cars coming. Wanganeen Ave near ngunnawal primary is very dangerous

When turn right from chinner crescent on to Kingsford smith in Melba you can’t see the cars coming down the hill due to the long grass. I’d have it a guess the government shares some liability in the event of an accident due to allowing plant growth over a certain height at a corner. From their own requirements:

• Keep all plants at a height of no more than 50 cm from natural ground (in line with Austroads Guidelines) or 20 cm in Bushfire Prone Areas. This includes any mounding up to 150mm or excavating down to 10 cm.

Given pollen counts are extreme and as soon as the weather heats up that grass will be good hiding spots for snakes (right near footpaths), the ACT Government has done an atrocious job of keeping the grass cut.

Drive around Gungahlin and it looks like a shabby mess (including around playgrounds). Call for residents to volunteer if you need to; We can get through it together and all just pitch in and do a little bit. I’ll get my brush-cutter out and get to work; Just need the government to pick up the cut grass (I don’t have a Ute or a trailer).

Simon Trommestad I like the idea of a community based public space care as it is becoming more evident that the gov can’t handle it. Perhaps the idea of a reduction in ever increasing land rates if we volunteered to “care” might work , but then again it would cost way to much in admin and the gov would never see the sense in that !

Peter Bucke, I agree. I am concerned about a snap change in the weather and it’s fire hazard & genuinely – snakes are a concern too.

Laughs. Every year, same whingeing. This year, unprecedented rain when no one can get the grass under control and still they bellyache.

Not the only basic service being completely neglected.

Love the Be Right Back BRB signage around town 😊

Declan Keneally oh no not the grass lmao

Here’s a idea, all the dole bludgers, get a lawn mower, push one handed to them and start mowing lawns around there area to earn there money or dole payments

John Alves 100%… But they would find a excuse to get out of it

Suz Ferrito , they give a excuse,no payment.

John Alves Yes but only the ones on the dole who are bludging and not looking for work, and those who are actively seeking employment while on the dole can be excluded.

I’m retired & would be happy if the ACT Govt supplied me with a ride on mower & fuel to maintain some of the grounds in my suburb so as they don’t become over grown.

Herman Riet me too, I will join you only too happy to do

Paul Muscat There is a group on Northside in the new suburbs called Friends of the Park I tried ringing & leaving message they never got back. They don’t from what I can see have a Southside group

Lets know if you contact only too happy to help, thanks

James Hillier, What’s it going to take?

A better and enhanced strategy is obviously required. Have driven into Canberra along Northbourne Ave and Barton Highways recently, terrible vistas to our national capital. Other local councils seem to have this task as a higher priority (and do a great job, especially in Q’ld), time for ACT to do likewise

Andrew Higginson totally agree! what an eye sore to the capital along northbourne ave.

Whatever grass areas that are being mowed is only being done in a half-assed way too. Leaving literally square meters of tall grass around signs and trees either points to cost cutting (pardon the pun), or simply getting the wrong contractors in to do the job.

They’re doing a good job considering the amount of rain we’ve had. It can’t be easy keeping so much grass under control in ~800 sq. km of urban area.

Just concentrate manpower and resources on essential areas like roundabouts and verges and let the goats take care of the rest. 👍

Let the grass grow, birds eat the seeds, it’s the bush capital

Rien Wiersma – Most of the grass we’re talking about here is weed species…which invade the bush capital. And you’re right, birds do eat the seeds, then disperse them into the parks in their droppings. The timing is unfortunate for this year, because the grasses have all set seed before being mowed, so it’s just exacerbating the problem. There’s also the issues done people face with swollen eyes and scratchy throats with hay fever and asthma on an increasing number of days.

Troy Dare yes, you’re right, I was just being naughty,

Can I just say that the amount of animal droppings around Lennox gardens, on the grass, over Winter, is disgusting, and makes playing social volleyball very tough. Very tough indeed.

Hi. Mowing is necessary in some areas. However many parts of Canberra that don’t need mowing are mown. e.g. many median strips. Mowing is costly, produces CO2, as makes an area of negligible environmental value, and encourages Noisy Miners, which keep other birds away. The no-mow area in our Landcare area has great native grasses and saves a lot. Some of the ten million dollars, or so, spent each year on mowing could easily be saved, at the same time creating better habitat.

Lawn mowers, or any internal combustion engine for that matter, do not produce CO2.

I think you mean Indian Mynas. Noisy Miners are people like Clive Palmer and Twiggy Forrest.

Ever year this happens at the same time so why can’t we just fix it. As a rate payer I’m appalled at the lack of maintenance our capital does not get year after year, nothing but useless excuses I think it’s time for. Change in government. I’m ashamed to call Canberra the national capital. Long grass, potholes, graffiti a shame that needs to be fixed. Funny how the city grass never gets as long as the suburbs. Go fix the issues Andrew Barr ACT Chief Minister once and for all or maybe we need to fix your political status as chief minister, oh and have we never heard or a brush cutter for god sake

John Brooks That was exhausting. 😳

Martin Smith oh well it will fall of deaf ears anways

I would like to see someone clear the grass that has been left all along the gutters and footpaths after the mowing

Lisa can you pls show this to Shaun

Our street has no street sign, and the grass in public areas in our suburb is in bad need of mowing. But I am tired of government blaming the weather, because it’s an ongoing problem in our once pristine city

Cathy Sorrentino go onto ‘Fix My Street’ and put in a request for a new street sign.

Jody Friend lol your guys and girls are doing a great job!!

It’s the duty of care that the government doesn’t respect. They expect private business to do it but not themselves. When the grass gets so high at roundabouts and intersections that you can’t see it’s buddy dangerous. But this is want we come to expect from the Barr government.

Jason Gibbs how else do you expect to pay for an overpriced bus on rails?

Having issues at some of the roundabouts even seeing oncoming traffic clearly. Surely we can hire more people to mow or reduce the rates of the homeowners ( with reserves or laneways near them) and ask them to maintain /mow the laneway next to their home

Barr Steel are happy people they really don’t care about Canberra even they get voted in every time

Ashley goats!!!! We were right 😂

How about employing sufficient amounts of workers to cut it. It really isnt rocket science.

Also will need to get more machines for extra staff to use…

And they have to be licenced. And there has to be funding diverted from other things to employ the contractors. (its mainly done by contractors.)

Don Fletcher yeah, so do it. Why is there so much resistance to doing things in Canberra?

Brian Kilgannon not resistance….its just not as simple as hiring more staff…they need more mowers and at over a $10000 each and then staff have to be trained to use it, they actually have to be certified…where is the money coming from…we all know they aren’t going to cut the Trams budget 🤔

Rachel Greene Thats not really difficult to do. Other places do it so why not Canberra?

RIDICULOUS to think we should want a system that cuts everything on time even when conditions are so extreme as they are this year. I prefer to pay for a system that does best in average conditions, copes when we experience (say) 80th percentile weather but runs behind in 90th percentile weather. Because that might be affordable.

Careful Don, you’re making sense! 😉

Don Fletcher sound a bit like our hospital system. Designed to work 80 percent of the time? Pity about the people dealing with the other 20 percent?

Hi David Jackson, while there are parallels between urban mowing and saving lives, there are differences. Few of us would accept 80% success in a hospital if it means 20% of people who presented with life threatening illnesses would die shortly after. I think society would have different expectations of hospitals and mowing.

Don Fletcher sadly our town council doesn’t care about either

It should be the law that people have to mow their own nature strip.

The grass is as high as an elephant’s eye.

Hate to agree with the Liberals but thigh high grass on the median strip on Ginninderra drive is not a good look and its just as bad in other places.

Robyn Holder why don’t you get some walking leads for the goats then. Take your brolly too. 🐐🌦

It’s not just the Grass, it’s the trees that have fallen in public areas.. The one on Yarra Glen south bound on the foot of the Deakin west sports fields has nearly been there a year🤔

Metre high grass = urban forest

It’s dangerous now… some intersections the grass is so long you can’t see on coming traffic, and some of the footpaths you can’t even walk on

Heather Rattenbury yes I asked the question as to why its not being maintained ,but I inquiried on a act post that was not the correct post to ask about that on and I got blasted by some women lol

Cathy Oczenaschek from what I have heard they have only budgeted for 3 mowers to do the whole of Canberra? Don’t know how true that is

Cathy Oczenaschek the first round about on Monaro at Hume is an accident waiting to happen..cars going straight thru, can’t see turning vehicles until the last minute,as the grass is so long…I travel daily and it’s a nightmare..

Saw a Brown snake a few weeks back along a pathway with long grass.

Megan Meg if the grass was short grass you might have seen more.

Megan Meg they’re out and about, even near Lake Tuggers on cement paths.

Oh no, the snakes, daring to exist even though we’ve built over the places they live.

How about fixing the potholes and uneven pavers in shopping centres first, they can’t even do that properly.

Marko Lehikoinen Same here, I must have looked like I was drunk driving to mum’s today, swerving around the potholes in the road😤

How is it the bane of existence for many Canberrans. It’s a mild annoyance at best.

And what is proposed? Mowing in the rain? There’s been like three days in the last few weeks it has been dry!

Because most of the staff are on contract and not technically officially employed by tams.

Ruth Donnellan thats correct through labour hire companies and even within TAMS they are on contract not many are permanent.

Steve Luby I wonder why…

Cleary has nothing to do with the excessive rain we’ve had hey 🙄

Ray Mcgee right? I’ve got a jungle in my yard simply because recent weather has meant we’ve not mowed as frequently, and everything is growing at speed. I hardly expect employees to be out in that weather operating machinery if it puts them at risk, when I’m not willing to do the same at home 😅

Joshua Bracey – glad it’s not you anymore?

Love seeing the goats near the on ramp to the Tuggeranong Parkway from Lady Denman. Great idea!

They put the sheep in the solar panel paddocks along Monaro near Rose Cottage. Win win!

They mowed out the front of our place this morning at 730am. Haha. Not complaining though.

What is the panic about a bit of long grass. Seems to me this is all about appearances not substance. Green grass is not a fire risk (fast moving grass fires are not possible until a grassland more than 80% cured according to the NSW Rural Fire Service) and intense lawn mowing lowers biodiversity and favors pests. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/dec/19/lawn-mowing-reduction-can-help-wildlife-says-study

Its a hazard around my place. Can’t see around corners because it’s so long

Carly Hayes Yes its true we need to mow within 20m of an intersection but beyond that what’s the hurry.

George Watling And I notice they finally did start doing this in my area. It was such a hazard at roundabouts especially. Just could not see uncoming traffic until you were pretty much on the roundabout. People must have complained and now I have noticed that they’ve mowed the 2 meters of the nature strip closest to the roundabouts in lots of places. And I think that is what is needed here. Not a blanket “We must spend a fortune on keeping all grass manicured at all times!” policy. But some common sense in how to prioritise these jobs.

These opposition idiots will complain about anything… anyone with half a brain know it’s not feasible in this weather full stop.

Kerri Hallas but it’s happened the past few years as well … 🤷‍♂️

Kerri Hallas it happens every year. Someone should tell them that we aren’t in drought permanently…

Liberals really like whining don’t they? What’s their solution? More mowing on wet grass?

When you build a sprawling city, it becomes harder and harder and increasingly expensive to maintain. Want your quarter acre block in the boondocks? then you need to pay endlessly increasing rates

Michael Ridwanullah plus they taste good

Mabo Drive in Bonner is always so unkept, just got a partial mow but there are still long grass/weed stems everywhere not a nice place to take you dog for a walk and hard to see at all the roundabouts 🙁

The regime is busy planning decades ahead for climate changes, and forgot to plan months ahead for weather changes.

The roundabout at Monaro Highway/Isabella Drive is particularly dangerous with the height of the grass. You should be able to see a vehicle approaching the roundabout, not hidden by the grass. This is really dangerous and the ACT government should pull their finger out before there is a serious accident

Of course, both sides of politics could encourage interested and motivated residents to “adopt a patch” and reduce the total mowing load. It would encourage community pride, health and resilience as well as saving a few $. I do some government land adjoining my patch whenever I have my mower out, as does my neighbour. Our adopted pieces look neat as a pin, shame not all the other neighbours have taken a similar approach.

That would be tantamount to the cosseted cyclists in Canberra who get free bike tracks and then complain that they can’t use them because the government won’t remove rubbish from them actually getting off their unregistered bikes and cleaning the tracks themselves.

This is a great idea!
