A lot of people are interested in having steel grates from the Mackinac Bridge.

They are 60-years-old and weigh two tons a piece.

The Michigan Department of Transportation and the Mackinac Bridge Authority are auctioning off several, very large, pieces of steel from the iconic Mackinac Bridge.

All 752 of the 40 foot by 5 foot grates are inspected every year.

When they need to be replaced with new galvanized grates, the retired ones are put on the auction block.

Previously, they were sold for scrap.

Bidding has exceeded $1,500 so far.

If you want a smaller piece, your chance will come soon.

“We also sell smaller chunks of it so, we sell, medium size which is 2 feet by 3 feet and then we sell little pieces of grating because many people just want a small chunk of the bridge and so they can get what size they want,” said Kim Nowack, Executive Secretary of the Mackinac Bridge.

The auction for these large pieces ends next Wednesday, March 24.
