Mexico’s state-owned petroleum company, PEMEX recently chose Strongwell’s fiberglass handrail and grating for the new offshore living quarters platform, Cayo Arcas. The key factors for selection of fiberglass by PEMEX included corrosion resistance, safety, weight and difficulty in installation.

The products of choice were Strongwell’s 2 inch, square, SAFRAIL™ industrial handrail and DURADEK® fiberglass grating. SAFRAIL™ and DURADEK® are ideal substitutes for aluminium or steel in corrosive environments or at any place where handrail maintenance costs and frequent grating are not acceptable. The standard SAFRAIL™ handrail is safety yellow, while the DURADEK®grating was pigmented to match.

DURADEK® I-6000 and DURADEK® I-4000 were installed in the stairwells and perimeter walkways respectively. Both gratings were one and one half inch deep.

Both SAFRAIL™ and DURADEK® are subjected to pultrusion with fire-retardant polyester resin and are low in electrical and thermal, key factors when considering the products were installed on the living quarter decks.

Unequaled corrosion resistance is featured in each fiberglass product in conditions such as that found in the saltwater or offshore environment. The fiberglass grating and handrail are also lightweight. The Mexico distributor of Strongwell, Moix International, fabricated and installed the fiberglass products on time. In addition, SAFRAIL™ and DURADEK® provided savings on labor and maintenance, resulting in long-term savings and the elimination of cost and inconvenience of downtime for repairs.
